Ytterbium metal is a light gray metal, technical application: Laser materials. Metals ions are used to generate laser radiation in the near-infrared range, with a wavelength of 1.06–1.07 µm, and in the form of ytterbium oxide is used to produce high-power fiber lasers. Single-crystal alloy of barium fluoride – ytterbium fluoride doped with holmium ions is used as a powerful and technological laser material.
Thermoelectric materials. Ytterbium monotelluride is a perspective thermoelectric material (thermopower 680 µV / K).
Magnetic materials. On the basis of ytterbium produced a variety of magnetic alloys.
Metal purity: 99.9%;

In 1878, the Swiss chemist Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac separated from the rare earth “erbia” another independent component, which he called “ytterbia”, for Ytterby, the village in Sweden near where he found the new component of erbium.
Natural ytterbium is a mixture of seven stable isotopes, which altogether are present at concentrations of 3 parts per million. This element is mined in China, the United States, Brazil, and India in form of the minerals monazite, euxenite, and xenotime. The ytterbium concentration is low because it is found only among many other rare earth elements; moreover, it is among the least abundant.
