Selenium metal is used in the chemical industry in organic synthesis (oxidation, halogenation, hydrogenation, etc.) for the manufacture of oxidizing agents, catalysts, and also as a vulcanizer in the production of a number of rubber products, etc.
In the metallurgical and steel industries, selenium grades ST-0 and ST-1 are used as additives in the manufacture of products from cast and stainless steel, as well as copper and fire-resistant alloys. 1% selenium metal improves the ductility and strength in copper and iron alloys. It is also used for doping lead in the production of battery grids, as well as an additive in polishing electroplating compositions.

Selenium metal– from Ancient Greek σελήνη (selḗnē) “Moon” – was discovered in 1817 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who noted the similarity of the new element to the previously discovered tellurium (named for the Earth).
His salts are toxic in large amounts, but trace amounts are necessary for cellular function in many organisms, including all animals. It is an ingredient in many multivitamins and other dietary supplements, including infant formula. Selenium is a semiconductor and is used in photocells. Applications in electronics, once important, have been mostly replaced with silicon semiconductor devices.
